Jason Warner

African and African American Studies, with a primary field in Government

Jason Warner is a Ph.D. student in Harvard’s African and African-American Studies program, where he has a disciplinary focus in Government. His research interests include international relations, comparative politics, security studies, and African/a political thought. Specifically, he is interested in the international relations of the Global South - particularly in Africa and Caribbean - and their places in contemporary international relations theory and practice.

His published and forthcoming policy-oriented work has focused on African security issues (including narco-trafficking, cybercrime, human security, and continental defense policy) and Africa’s international relations (within the African Union and in bilateral and multilateral relations with Iran, China, Turkey, and the Caribbean). His theoretical work has investigated issues including the nexus of sovereignty and freedom in African thought, Marxist (Gramscian) applications to African politics, and transnational conceptions of social justice.

Jason holds an M.A. in African Studies from Yale University and a B.A. (highest honors) in International Studies and French from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. He has worked and/or interned for the United Nations Development Program (Nigeria), Nigeria’s Ambassador to the United Nations, the U.S. Department of Defense, Freedom House, and is a contributor on African affairs at CNN.com.  In addition, he is the former editor-in-chief of the Yale Journal of International Affairs.
