Biography
John M. Mugane, a linguist specializing in African languages, recently came to Harvard University as Senior Preceptor and Director of the African Language Program. He is also President of the African Language Teachers Association of North America (ALTA), a position he has held since 2001. Before coming to Harvard, Professor Mugane was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Linguistics at Ohio University, Athens, Ohio.
Professor Mugane earned his Ph.D. in Linguistics at the University of Arizona and his M.A. in Linguistics at Ohio University. He also received an M.A. in International Affairs, African Studies at Ohio University. His B.Ed. in Languages, Literature, and Linguistics is from Kenyatta University in Kenya.
John Mugane's research interests include Bantu linguistics, African languages, computer mediated language instruction, grammar documentation, and pedagogy.
Among Professor Mugane's publications are the following: Linguistic Typology and Representation of African Languages: ACAL # 5 by Africa World Press; A Paradigmatic Grammar of Gikuyu by CSLI Publications, Tujifunze; Kiswahili Let's Learn Swahili by Aramati Publications; and Online African language learning resources incorporating multimedia for Swahili, Somali, and Gikuyu. Dr. Mugane is also the author of several published papers on Bantu languages and linguistics and on instructional technology.
