Class of 2013
Laura is originally from Seattle, Washington and is a senior in Kirkland house. She is the president of the Harvard College Coalition for East African Peace and the International Coordinator of Wema Children’s Centre, a school and orphanage in Bungoma, Western Kenya. At Wema, Laura works with the Kenyan directors on projects such as the building a new well, medical clinic, and computer lab, and she will be leading a trip to Wema this J-Term. Since Laura became involved with Wema after her freshman year, efforts have expanded to three other college campuses, and students have raised over $60,000 in donations and grants. Laura is interested in the potential of creative business models to create more sustainable international development. She spent both her freshman and sophomore summers in East Africa, studying intensive Swahili. Laura now speaks conversational Swahili and is interested in a career in social entrepreneurship and development work.
