#  AAAS Professor Evelynn Hammonds to Speak at CAS Book Launch

On **Thursday, October 21, 2021**, at 1:00pm (Eastern), the [Center For African Studies](https://africa.harvard.edu/event/empire-rubber-virtual-book-launch-conversation-gregg-mitman-evelynn-hammonds) will host a virtual book launch of Gregg Mitman's recent work, *[Empire of Rubber: Firestone's Scramble for Land and Power in Liberia](https://thenewpress.com/books/empire-of-rubber)*. Joining author Gregg Mitman in conversation will be Paul Farmer and **[AAAS Professor Evelynn Hammonds](/people/evelynn-m-hammonds)** to discuss racial capitalism, ecological injustice, and medical racism focused on the history of Firestone Tire & Rubber Company and its efforts to turn Liberia, founded in 1847 as a free Black republic, into America’s rubber empire.
