 

#  AAAS Professor Gates Discusses "The Columbia Seven" at Peabody

 On **Wednesday, April 7, 2021 from 6:00-7:00pm** (Eastern), **[AAAS Professor Henry Louis Gates Jr](/people/henry-louis-gates-jr)**. will join Professor Gregg Hecimovich in a discussion, ["Recovering the Histories of Seven Enslaved Americans"](https://www.peabody.harvard.edu/recovering-histories-seven-enslaved-americans) regarding the process of unearthing the histories of formerly enslaved people. The focus will be on “The Columbia Seven": Alfred, Delia, Drana, Fassena, Jack, Jim, and Renty, the seven Black men and women photographed against their will in Columbia, South Carolina in 1850. These controversial photographs are the subject of a new book, *[To Make Their Own Way in the World](https://aperture.org/books/coming-soon/to-make-their-own-way-in-the-world-the-enduring-legacy-of-the-zealy-daguerreotypes/)* (Peabody Museum Press/Aperture 2020).
