#  AAAS Professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr. Wins 2023 Tony Horwitz Award

 The Society of American Historians announced this week that **[AAAS Professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr](/people/henry-louis-gates-jr).** is the recipient of the fourth annual [Tony Horwitz Award.](https://sah.columbia.edu/content/prizes/tony-horwitz-prize/2023-henry-louis-gates-jr) The annual prize honors the Society of American Historians' former president, Tony Horitz, who died in 2019, and recognizes a "distinguished work in American history of wide appeal and enduring public significance." Previous winners of the Tony Horwitz Award include: Eric Foner (2022), Lonnie G. Bunch III (2021), and Frances Fitzgerald (2020). The award ceremony was held on May 15, 2023 at the Century Association at 7 West 43rd Street in New York City.
