On Thursday, July 30, 2020, *[Harvard Magazine](https://harvardmagazine.com/2020/07/harvard-university-press-releases-racism-in-america-a-reader)* published an article entitled: "This is a Gift" reporting on [Harvard University Press' (HUP) free release of a book, *Racism in America: A Reader*](https://www.hup.harvard.edu/catalog.php?isbn=9780674251687).

The book, just under 300 pages, gathers some 20 essays excerpted from HUP-published books—in law, history, sociology, economics, philosophy, medicine, art, literature—that focus on racism. Among the included authors in the compilation are AAAS Professors [Walter Johnson](/people/walter-johnson) and [Tommie Shelby](/people/tommie-shelby), and former AAAS Professor Elizabeth Hinton.

More than a mere statement of solidarity, *[Racism in America: A Reader](https://www.hup.harvard.edu/catalog.php?isbn=9780674251687)*, is HUP's way of actively supporting the demonstrations and protests against racism and police brutality occurring in the US and internationally. Sharmila Sen, Harvard University Press' editorial director, said the reader was created as a "... book for students, it’s for teachers, it’s for general readers who are curious as they’re reading news headlines or social media, and they want something with a little bit more depth.”

[*Racism in America: A Reader* is downloadable from the HUP’s website as a PDF](https://www.hup.harvard.edu/catalog.php?isbn=9780674251687) at no charge, and will be available soon from Amazon Kindle and other electronic outlets, also free of charge.
