DESCRIPTION:The <a href="https://africa.harvard.edu/event/empire-rubber-virtual-book-launch-conversation-gregg-mitman-evelynn-hammonds" target="_blank" title="CAS Event Page">Center For African Studies</a> will host a virtual book launch of Gregg Mitman's recent work, <em><a href="https://thenewpress.com/books/empire-of-rubber" target="_blank" title="Publisher's Book Page">Empire of Rubber: Firestone's Scramble for Land and Power in Liberia</a></em>.  Joining author Gregg Mitman in conversation will be Paul Farmer and <strong><a href="internal:/people/evelynn-m-hammonds" target="_blank" title="Professor Hammonds' Faculty Bio">AAAS Professor Evelynn Hammonds</a></strong> to discuss racial capitalism, ecological injustice, and medical racism focused on the history of Firestone Tire &amp; Rubber Company and its efforts to turn Liberia, founded in 1847 as a free Black republic, into America’s rubber empire.
